We offer a broad range of courses at Breakthrough College, from the more traditional Functional Skills, GCSEs and A Levels to Technical Awards and BTECs. This includes the WJEC Levels 1 and 2 Vocational Award in Construction and the Built Environment.
These Vocational or Technical Awards provide learners with opportunities to study vocational subjects alongside GCSEs and other general and vocational qualifications as part of a broad programme of study. They offer an experience that focuses on applied learning, i.e. acquiring and applying knowledge, skills and understanding through purposeful tasks.
The built environment sector is a very diverse sector, comprising 10% of the UK economy, and covering an extremely wide range of occupations from handyman and woman services to major infrastructure projects. However, only a third of employers in the construction sector believe that there is a talent pool sufficient to meet the industry’s needs. This means there are multiple employment opportunities in the construction industry and the demand for workers is not currently being met; something that bodes well for the future prospects of our students who are studying it.
The wide and diverse range of careers in construction include manual and professional occupations, and many require further education and training either through apprenticeships or further and higher education – something we always explore with our students.
Students learn a wide range of skills as part of the course, including bricklaying. We are delighted that one of our students recently achieved a Distinction in her bricklaying assessment, but not surprised – her attention to detail and thoroughness is second to none!
