Preparation for Adulthood

We take preparation for adulthood seriously at Breakthrough, offering a bespoke programme that supports all pupils in making informed, confident, and ambitious transitions into adult life. This programme runs alongside the academic curriculum and has four key areas of focus:

Employment, education and training happens through our academic and vocational courses and our careers provision.

Independent living skills are taught according to need.

Community participation and relationships falls under both PSHE and our work experience programme.

Our therapeutic approach ensures that health and wellbeing underpins everything, with key topics addressed within PSHE also.

These areas provide a framework for our young people to plan for their future and develop the skills and support necessary to live a fulfilling adult life.

careers

Our careers programme provides students with access to information, activities and experiences that are vital to enable them to learn about the skills and qualities required for their chosen field.

We work alongside our learners to raise their aspirations, build their awareness of opportunities and possibilities within the world of work, and remove barriers to employment.

By realising their potential, and understanding the steps they need to undertake to achieve their goals, we support our students to embrace their next steps. Whether that’s on to further or higher education, paid employment, apprenticeships or a voluntary role, our careers programme encourages them to thrive.

independent living

We want all of our students to feel able to live an independent, safe and healthy lifestyle. We therefore deliver a broad set of skills in a bespoke way for each student. This might involve support and information about diet, exercise, personal hygiene and self care, alongside helping students to recognise and respond to risky situations.

We teach students how to be safe in the community, both online and off, and help prepare them to travel independently and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We also provide opportunities for our learners to identify ways to engage with and enjoy leisure activities.

7

community

The connections we form with others matter, and the community and sense of belonging we nurture at Breakthrough is often one of its most transformational aspects.

We work hard to build on this and help students to develop key characteristics that will enrich their personal and social lives beyond College. We support them to make informed decisions that are appropriate for their unique set of needs and aspirations, and help them to develop the social skills, communication tools and resilience that will enable them to enjoy fulfilling relationships in a range of contexts.

By inspiring and motivating students to develop themselves as individuals, and providing them with a range of relevant skillsets and meaningful experiences, we support them to remain connected to the wider world as they transition from Breakthrough to adulthood.
