At Breakthrough College we have an extensive careers programme that is individualised for each young person, enabling them to thrive as they transition in to the next stage of their life. By exploring career options and the requirements and realities of a range of career choices, we help them to develop the necessary skillsets, overcome potential barriers and build the relevant experience to flourish in their chosen career.

We provide the opportunity for our learners to experience the world of work with guest speakers, community outreach, volunteer programmes and work experience placements. We also offer external careers advice and visits to local career fairs. This combination of relevant information, industry expertise and meaningful experience ensures our students move on from Breakthrough with the skills and the confidence necessary for them to embrace their next steps. Our careers curriculum is underpinned by the Gatsby Benchmarks and DofE guidance, always aiming to support clear objectives that sequence learning in a logical and age-appropriate way.

Our varied and inclusive curriculum actively seeks to challenge misconceptions and stereotypical thinking, whilst showcasing a diverse range of role models and opportunities. We are ambitious for our students and always strive to raise aspirations in a way that is informed by and realistic about future pathways, study options and labour market opportunities. Parents and carers are involved in this process at all stages.

There is time in every timetable dedicated to this preparation for adulthood and careers specifically, but it also forms an integral part of every subject curriculum too. The expertise, insight and experience of our staff team helps to shape our students’ understanding of the world of work, and we actively encourage this. We also ensure every student understands the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them, including academic, technical and vocational routes, upon leaving Breakthrough.
