Along with the rest of the nation, we marked Remembrance Day on Tuesday, holding a minute’s silence at the eleventh hour. Some of our centres also undertook commemorative activities to help highlight the cultural and historical significance of the day. Marking Remembrance Day as a College is important for a range of reasons: not just in terms of educating about history, but crucially as a way of fostering empathy and promoting peace.
The shared communal aspect is also important. By coming together in this way we aim to encourage reflection and nurture respect for one another and fellow citizens. Experiences like this help to build community and a sense of belonging for students and staff alike.
Many of our students followed up the minute’s silence with one-to-one conversations about the social, political, and economic factors that shaped both the war and our current world – this kind of critical thinking is also important to nurture. Some staff shared poems wth their students, others looked at the significance of the poopy as a symbol of remembrance. A very thoughtful, and thought provoking, day.
