One of our students has written a useful guide to a typical day at the Lighthouse. It’s a great insight!
Before I get there (7:00 – 9:30):
Every day at seven o’clock is when my alarm goes off but I usually don’t get out of bed until twenty minutes past eight. By that time I will have twenty minutes to get dressed before we leave for college. When we do leave we go by car and travel across the motorway until we reach the Lighthouse at around half past nine.
When I arrive (9:30):
Half past nine is when this college opens to students and usually to attract attention I ring the doorbell. Once in I have to fill out a form showing when I came in and if I want the school lunch; I always do want the school lunch as they are always delicious. After signing in I wait in reception for the first teacher of the day. Then we navigate to our room and start the lesson, sometimes after I’ve gotten myself a drink first.
The first three lessons (9:30 – 1:00):
I have three lessons before lunch, the first one lasts half an hour longer than the rest. For every swap of teacher, we all meet in the conference room. The lessons can vary from usual subjects such as maths, English, ICT, music and cooking to activities such as volunteering and at times, going for walks. I have been volunteering at a Cancer Research charity shop for a while now and even though I have already reached the requirement for my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze certificate in volunteering, I still work there as I enjoy it and they need the staff.
Lunch (1:00 – 1:30):
For lunch there are a variety of meals made by the cook herself and they include fajitas, curries and jacket potato amongst others.
The last lesson (1:30 – 2:30):
After lunch I gather my bag again and go off into the final lesson of the day after which I leave, signing out again to show when I left.
When I get home:
Once home there are usually some things I need to do around the house to help maintain it. I also tend to spend some time on my computer and sometimes I read before bed.
