Beekeeping at Brocks

Beekeeping at Brocks

The beehives at Brocks Farm are well established now, and a real source of joy (and delicious honey!) for everyone there.

We have a dedicated member of staff who tends to the bees as part of the animal care program, and who has been looking after them for the past five years. She is supported by colleagues from Buckfast Abbey’s bee department which is a brilliant collaboration, not least because of the work experience placements they offer our students. Currently one of our animal care students attends on Thursdays for work experience and prior to this another student completed their Level 3 work-based placement with them so it’s been invaluable.

We check the bees weekly, looking in each frame for eggs, larvae and brood which gives us an indication of hive health. Beekeeping offers numerous wellbeing benefits for students, including reduced stress, increased mindfulness, enhanced connection with nature, and the development of valuable soft skills. Engaging with bees can be a meditative and therapeutic experience, fostering a sense of calm and promoting positive mental health. Furthermore, beekeeping provides opportunities for students to develop practical skills, teamwork, and communication abilities, all while contributing to environmental sustainability – and the honey’s not bad either!
