May 1st marks the start of the cricket season for many clubs and it has been fantastic to see one of our students take part in three of Ermington Cricket Club’s matches so far.
The big debut, away to Yealm on May 14th, saw him given the responsibility of batting at number 4 in the order. As a newcomer to the sport, it was really wonderful to see him stand at the crease, strike the ball as confidently as he did, and hit a four in 8 of his 10 balls.
With a home debut against Plymouth Philanthropists on May 29th, on a damp and blustery evening, our student was determined to improve his batting technique and was keen to learn from other players who shared their knowledge and tips. He was offered the opportunity, by the captain, of bowling during Ermington’s dominant victory, but decided he would spend time practicing.. This kind of self-awareness is so valuable.
The last game was a close fought defeat away at Yealmpton on the 19th June, where our student batted at number 7, coming up against some outstanding bowlers. He showed true determination and was athletic in the outfield, preventing the opposition making the run chase too easy.
We would like to say a huge well done for taking up this team sport, learning new skills, developing wider social friendships and having fun – it’s really commendable and testament to what can be achieved with the right confidence and outlook.
