GCSE Engineering is a practical subject and one that is popular with our students who prefer a more hands-on approach to learning. It provides a taste of the real working world as well as an opportunity to explore the engineering sector, and GCSE students tackle collaborative projects, engage in manual work, learn how to use the latest technology and tools of the trade, and gain insight and practical experience in engineering careers. They develop invaluable problem-solving skills whilst learning about construction and the properties of engineering materials, from the physical to the mechanical.
The AQA course that we follow looks at engineering materials and manufacturing processes and systems, along with the impact of modern technologies. It also assesses a range of practical engineering skills. Students have to produce engineering drawings to communicate a solution to a brief and an engineering product that solves a problem.
One of our engineering students has created a disability aid that can dispense a measured amount of coffee when required. These photos show both their original prototype and the finished product:
In a separate project, another student has been practising their practical engineering skills by recycling and repurposing a scrap object in order to make a crucible. They took a discarded fire extinguisher and cut it, shaped it and heat tested it in order to create the right form. They then beat out the spout using a hammer and anvil. The results are impressive:
