It may seem counter intuitive to be thinking about leaving Breakthrough College at the start of the academic year, but in fact we embed preparations for adulthood and life beyond College throughout the Breakthrough program. We know that our young people and their families are already thinking about their hopes for the future – as are we.
Preparing for adulthood is one of the most important milestones in any young person’s life. It marks the moment where childhood support gradually shifts towards independence, responsibility, and self-discovery. Moving from childhood to adulthood, just like moving from one setting to another, is referred to as a transition. These transitions or changes can feel daunting for young people, especially young people with SEND, to navigate, which is part of the reason why planning starts early. This planning for the future has the young person themselves at its heart, but other people that know the young person well – from education, health, social care services or the voluntary sector – can also contribute and support.
In the UK, preparing for adulthood is more than simply leaving school or finding a job. It is about ensuring that every young person has the skills, opportunities, and confidence to take their next step, whether that is moving into further education, beginning work, finding suitable housing, or developing life skills that lead to greater independence. The transition plans that underpin this process are vital for ensuring each young person thrives in adulthood.
Our approach to this transition planning is varied and tailored to individual needs. It might involve travel training, socialisation skills and support with independent living for one learner, whereas for another the focus might be on work experience or university applications.
Project work can be really helpful in teaching a range of skills. One student recently undertook a chilli sauce project, for example. From growing the tomatoes and chillies needed, to making the hot sauce itself, designing the label and packaging the final product up, the student involved learnt gardening, cooking and entrepreneurial skills that will prove invaluable as an independent adult.
