Role play in education, especially for students with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), is a valuable tool to enhance social skills, communication, and emotional understanding through engaging, imaginative activities.
At Brocks, we recently transformed our caravan into a role play Burger Van in order to practise all of these skills, along with some mathematics. This kind of role play helps with the development of social skills, by encouraging interaction and communication with peers, and fostering important social skills like listening, taking turns, sharing, and cooperation. By stepping into different roles, students can develop empathy and understand perspectives beyond their own.
Our student loved selling ‘food’ to staff, interacting with those he knew well and some staff he had never met before. With a little help, he was able to work out prices, which coins to use and what change to give. Role play provides a safe and controlled environment for students to explore different emotions and scenarios, helping them develop coping mechanisms. It also stimulates imagination and creativity, allowing students to think outside the box and explore new ideas, whilst problem-solving as they anticipate consequences.
