Travel Training

Travel Training

As part of our Independent Living Skills (ILS) curriculum, we deliver travel training with many of our students. Travel training gives learners the confidence and skills to travel independently on buses, trains and walking routes, and we often emphasise different aspects with different students depending on what they need.

Being able to travel on public transport is a key life skill. It lets you make choices about how you live, go about your daily life and fulfil your potential. It is often a gateway to employment, further education and community participation.

Our travel training covers a range of areas, such as:

  • confidence in using buses or trains
  • personal safety
  • how to use timetables and buy tickets
  • road safety, including how to cope with traffic on major roads
  • what to do when things go wrong (e.g. the bus is late)
  • confidence in navigating when walking or cycling

The feedback we get from students is really heartening, and we love seeing them flourish with this new found independence.
