A Level students from Cannamore enjoyed a trip to the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford Upon Avon recently to watch a performance of Shakespeare’s Othello. They needed to watch a live performance of the play for their A Level English Literature syllabus, but with nothing scheduled locally the Devon opportunities were limited. As a result, staff and students embraced the long drive and experienced some of the very best theatre in the country.
After arriving in Stratford at lunchtime, the group enjoyed a picnic lunch by the river Avon before watching the matinee performance of the play.
Shakespeare’s Othello is a dark tragedy with some contemporary themes. In it, Othello is manipulated by the man he thought was his friend, bringing about the destruction of everything he holds dear. This was a powerful production that the students learnt a lot from, and the drive home was filled with discussion about the performance and the way it was interpreted.
