Every March Women’s History Month raises awareness of the contributions women have made to events through history and society. This year’s theme is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations” – something we strive to do every month here at Breakthrough.
Our comprehensive display highlighted some well known women, such as Malala Yousafzai, Jane Austen and Marie Curie. But it also drew attention to the accomplishments of some less well known women too: Wangari Maathai, Katherine G Johnson and Naomi Parker for example. Displays like this are so important, both for sparking conversations and insights but also for students to feel seen and represented. Students of all genders were then adding to the display, and sharing the names of other women they found inspiring too.
This month-long focus culminated in a quiz and poetry reading at Cannamore. From trying to name ten countries led by women to attempting to identify songs by female artists from a few seconds of a clip, students loved working in teams and competing against each other.
