Reading for fun is the single biggest indicator that a child will grow up to enjoy a happier and more successful life* – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational backgrounds or their income. It’s a huge part of why we prioritise reading at Breakthrough, and why days like World Book Day are so important.
As always, we have been distributing the world book day tokens, but we know there is less choice from the promotional £1 books for older readers and young adults. It’s why spaces like our Book Nook at Cannamore are so important so that students can borrow books as well.
At Brocks we celebrated World Book Day with members of staff dressing up as characters from ‘Alice In Wonderland’, a variety of colouring in activities, a quiz and a series of riddles made by one of our hardworking students.
We also gathered together to listen to poems written by one of our creative students and staff read sections of their favourite books. This included a BSL signing of ‘We Are Going On A Bear Hunt’. Our students, listened well and laughed along. One of our younger students who is usually not engaged by reading loved this activity and continued to be read to by their staff member.
It was a lovely atmosphere to be a part of and gave reading the priority it deserves.
