Learning is always tailored to each student here at Breakthrough so the range of opportunities and experiences we provide for our learners is extensive. Most recently we facilitated a research visit for one student who is a talented writer. As part of their educational journey here at Breakthrough they have dedicated lessons on creative writing, looking at different forms and techniques for improving their writing. The student involved has written a range of successful prose and poetry pieces, and even scripted the Cannamore Christmas play that involved staff and students alike!
Previously we have taken this student to Burgh Island as research into Agatha Christie and as a means of facilitating new writing inspired by her stories. The student is currently working on a longer prose piece set in a care home, and were keen to research the setting more thoroughly to ensure the details of their story were truly convincing, so we worked with them to arrange a visit to Selkirk House in Plymstock.
The staff at Selkirk could not have been more welcoming, arranging for our student to spend time with two very different residents and giving us a tour of the premises. They took the time to explain how things work there and how covid had impacted them. Visits such as these are important in other ways too as they help to build confidence in new social settings and develop independent research skills. It was a very worthwhile and rewarding afternoon.
Since returning to Breakthrough, the student’s writing has been hugely enriched by the experience. They made extensive notes and are able to draw on the visit when adding descriptive detail about the setting, for example. We can’t wait to read the finished piece!
